Jonathan Allentoff is a nationally acclaimed conductor, composer, performer, clinician, and educator. Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude, in Interdisciplinary Arts for Children with a Concentration in Music and an Applied Music Minor from The College at Brockport, State University of New York. A graduate of the college's Delta College Program, he is the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and was named the Interdisciplinary Arts for Children Departmental Scholar. He is currently pursuing graduate studies in music, the arts, and education at Stony Brook University's School of Professional Development, and advanced study in composition and conducting with Dr. William Hullfish. He has studied violin and viola performance with Dr. Thomas Saul, composition with Dr. Daniel Chazanoff, theory with Dr. Herbert Wise, music education with Kevin Warner, vocal music with Cantor/Hazzan Martin Leubitz, and orchestral conducting with Dr. David Fetler, Dr. David Harman, and Dianne Howard.
In addition to being the founding music director of the Brockport Symphony Orchestra, he holds positions as music director of the Greece Central Schools/GPAS Greece Community Orchestra, founding conductor of the Temple Beth El Orchestra, and associate conductor & principal arranger for the Brighton Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan appeared as one of the 2017 conducting clinicians at the NYSSMA/NYASTA Summer Conference in Albany, directing the conference orchestra in works by Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Haydn, as well as new compositions at the JW Pepper Reading Session. He has also conducted the Pittsford Mendon High School Chamber and Symphony Orchestras, Pittsford Mendon High School Select Choir, Amadeus Chorale, Temple Beth El Choir, Brockport Jazz Orchestra, Spencerport Community Chorus, Brockport College-Community Chorus, and the Nefesh Orchestra. Jonathan performs as principal viola with the Brighton and Greece Symphony Orchestras, and violin in the Finger Lakes Choral Festival summer performances with the Penfield Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared as violin/viola soloist with the Amadeus Chorale, Greece Symphony Orchestra, and the NYSSMA/ACDA Honor Choir, and he is a member of Brighton Symphony's touring Rococo Project Ensemble. He recently performed as principal viola in the NAfME Conference Orchestra, ASTA National Reading Orchestra, and the NYSSMA/NYASTA Directors' Orchestra, violin soloist at the NAfME National In-Service Conference Jam Session in Nashville, TN, and as a jazz/pop violist in the APME Conference ensembles at the University of Colorado Denver's Recital Hall, Berklee College of Music's Recital Hall, University of Southern California's Carson Center and University of Miami's Clarke Recital Hall. He also appeared as viola soloist in the Temple Beth El Jazz Quintet with Gap Mangione on piano, and was invited to perform in the Roberto Occhipinti Quartet Jazz Masterclass and Paul Gaspar's Eastman Recital Orchestra. Jonathan continues to be in demand as a teaching artist at local schools, and he also teaches string lessons and mentors advanced performers.
Jonathan was invited to attend a special conducting master class with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center. He was recently commissioned to create custom arrangements for the Pittsburgh and Knoxville Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He was also commissioned to compose, arrange, and conduct the music for Temple Beth El's Selichot Service - Music for the Soul featuring Cantor/Hazzan Martin Leubitz. Jonathan created the orchestral and choral arrangements of Van Alexander's new Christmas song, It Comes Around the Same Time Each Year, and conducted the premiere performances. He was also commissioned to compose the scores for two films produced by the State University of New York. In 2013, Jonathan composed and conducted a new jazz score for the DANSCORE ballet, Louie Strong, P. I., One Evening 1940s Rochester, NY. He has participated in national and international conferences, master classes, and festivals at the University of California, Irvine, Soka University of America, University of Colorado Denver, Berklee College of Music, George Mason University, The University of Utah, University of Miami, Lincoln Center, University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles, Texas Christian University, Miami University of Ohio, Northern Kentucky University, Baldwin Wallace University, McCormick Place, Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, Salt Palace Convention Center, Catalina's Jazz Club, and The Kennedy Center.
While traveling the country, he has been invited to attend private master classes with Jung-Ho Pak, Gerard Schwartz, Van Alexander, Charles Gambetta, Leonard Atherton, Curtis McKonly, and Christian Howes. In addition, he has attended orchestral rehearsals and composition/conducting sessions with Conrad Pope, Gustavo Dudamel, Eugene Corporon, Sandra Dackow, Christoph Eschenbach, Franz Welser-Most, Joshua Bell, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Ralph Grierson, David Newman, Louis Langree, Keith Lockhart, and Rei Hotoda. Jonathan was invited to give multimedia presentations/workshops with William Hullfish as a clinician at the Association for Popular Music Education 2016 & 2017 National Conferences at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the University of Colorado Denver. He also chaired a panel with Hollywood composers Robby Martiez an Richard Frank at the College Orchestra Directors Association 2018 International Conference at the University of California, Irvine, appeared on music education panels at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, and presented his collaborative orchestral projects at the College Orchestra Directors Association 2016 National Conference at The University of Utah School of Music. In addition, he was invited by Temple Beth El's Men's Club to present a series of lectures and performances, in collaboration with William Hullfish and Sid Rosenzwieg, entitled, "Jewish Composers from the Golden Age of Hollywood." He has conducted film score research at the Charles E. Young Research Library at the University of California, Los Angeles, Cinematic Arts Library at the University of Southern California, Archives and Rare Books Library at the University of Cincinnati, Bird Library at Syracuse University, and the Warner Bros. Archives, and was invited to attend a private scoring session at Warner Bros. Studios. He frequently writes new scores for silent films and enjoys restoring rare and lost orchestrations from classic Hollywood films. Jonathan was personally invited to join a table of Hollywood concertmasters at the 2014 ASMAC Golden Score Awards, hosted at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, honoring his colleagues Michael Giacchino and Jorge Calandrelli. He also recently performed as viola soloist in a national studio orchestra session conducted by his ASMAC colleague Richard Frank, and created transcriptions, arrangements, and background music for Eddie Money's musical, Two Tickets to Paradise, produced by the Rochester Association of Performing Arts.
His works have been performed by members of the League of American Orchestras, summer youth orchestras, and college and professional orchestras across the United States as well as in Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Jonathan distributes his music through his own ASCAP music publishing business, Allentoff Music www.allentoffmusic.com. His arrangements of American popular standards, holiday songs, and film soundtracks are licensed and copyrighted through Warner Bros. and Alfred Publishing, Chappell & Co., MGM, Hal Leonard, Ludlow Music, Stratford Music Corporation, Universal Music/Criterion Music Corporation, and Taradam Music. The 2008 NYSSMA Conference performance of his "Divertimento for Two Violins and String Orchestra" was recorded and distributed by Mark Custom Recording. Jonathan is an active member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, College Orchestra Directors Association, American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers, National Association for Music Education, New York State School Music Association, American String Teachers Association, and the Association for Popular Music Education.
